Government regulations have forced many vessel operators to “Re-Power” in the pursuit of lower Tier III and Tier IV emissions.  This is means new main engines and auxiliary equipment, including gear boxes and gear box coolers.  The Steamship Authority (SSA) in Falmouth, MA needed to repower their high speed passenger ferry, the M/V Iyanough as part of its fleet  engine upgrades.

After the new engine packages were installed, oil coolers on the ZF Gearboxes boxes began to overheat and to fail prematurely.  At the end of each voyage, sand, silt and sea grass were being sucked into the tubes and this created erosion at the face of the soft Cu-NI tubesheets.  Sea water bypassing developed and the oil cooling efficiency dropped; the decision was made to replace the OEM oil coolers.

Port Engineers at the Steamship Authority contacted Titanium Marine looking for a ‘bullet proof’ replacement which could be retrofitted without a lot of re-piping.  100% Titanium units were designed to “Drop In” to the existing space and each of the four units was installed in less than a day.  Feedback from the SSA management is that the oil is running cooler than before and plugging due to sea grass has been minimized due to the larger diameter Titanium tubes.

RSW & FREEZING SYSTEMS

Your diesel main engines and generators need efficient cooling for long service life. Rejecting engine heat to the ocean requires thousands of gallons per hour of sea water flowing through the jacket water and turbo intercoolers. Traditional copper-nickel engine coolers will fail over time and can pump raw sea water INTO the engines and auxiliaries.

This type of failure can cost tens of thousands of dollars and months out of service. With titanium jacket water and turbo intercoolers, you will have the most robust heat exchangers available. Your engines will run cooler and your valuable assets will be protected.
